Staten Islands first railroad began in 1860 as a passenger line connecting towns along the islands eastern shore, with ferry service from Vanderbilts Landing to Manhattan. The Staten Island Rapid Transit was a second line, built in 1885. During the 19th century, major eastern trunk railroads competed for the New York freight market. The Baltimore Ohio Railroad (BO) was a latecomer but saw opportunity with Staten Island in 1886, buying interest in both railroads. The BO took control of the islands passenger service and turned it into a thriving commuter railroad with three branches and nearly 40 stations, forever changing transportation in the borough. Reaching Staten Island from Cranford, New Jersey, the BO built a major freight yard at Arlington and a waterfront terminal at St. George. The railroads customers ran the gamut from large industries like Procter Gamble to small one-carload coal dealerships. By 1971, the cash-strapped BO sold the passenger service to the New York City Transit Authority (NYCTA), and by 1985, the BO had left New York for good. nycsubwayorg: Main Page Second Avenue Subway Phase I Opens; Published: 13:59 4 January 2017; The first phase of the Second Avenue Subway finally opened on 1/1/2017 After some previews for Staten Island NY - Staten Island New York Map Staten Island /sttn alnd/ is a borough of New York City New York United States located in the southwest part of the city Staten Island is separated from Staten Island Tunnel - Wikipedia The Staten Island Tunnel is an abandoned incomplete railway/subway tunnel in New York City It was intended to connect railways on Staten Island (precursors to the Industrial Offline Terminal Railroads & Rail-Marine Industrial Offline Contract Switching Rail Marine Pocket Terminal Brooklyn Kings Queens Staten Island Richmond Bronx Manhattan New York City Long Island nycsubwayorg: SIRT Staten Island Rapid Transit Overview SIRT now known as MTA Staten Island Railway (SIR) is a 14 Mile 21 Station commuter rail line Geographic north on the main line is timetable west (vice SubChat Message Index Welcome to SubChat This bulletin board is for discussion of rail and rapid transit topics as well as trolley and more Former members of SubTalk can be found here Staten Island Railway - Wikipedia The Staten Island Railway (SIR) is the only rapid transit line in the New York City borough of Staten Island Operated by the Staten Island Rapid Transit Operating MTA Subway Bus Long Island Rail Road Metro-North The Metropolitan Transportation Authority is New York City's transportation network serving a population of 152 million people in the 5000-square-mile area fanning Subways & Trains - Forgotten New York The view of the concrete Richmond Hill trestle from Hillside Avenue lets us see one of the Long Island Rail Roads more intriguing relics: the Keystone New York Transit Museum - Teacher Resource Center New York Transit Museum New York transportation transit public transportation brooklyn subways buses busses railroad commuter rail bridge bridges
